Professor Emerton, who has been connected with the Faculty of the University for over 40 years, was born in Salem, February 18, 1851. He was graduated from the University with the degree of A.B. in 1871. For the next five years he pursued his studies first in this country and later in Germany, receiving his Ph.D. at 'Leipzig in 1876. In that same year he became associated with the University as Instructor in History and German. He held this post for two years and from then until 1882 was Instructor in History. Professor Emerton is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, the American Historical Association, the New England History Teachers' Association, and of the Essex Institute, and a corresponding member of the Institute Genevois.
