Clumsy-faced, blacksmith-muscled, thick-fingered Emil Jannings, the thoroughly unhandsome hero, is the most finished, the most subtle cinemactor in the U.S. He does everything slowly; smiles break across his face like a gradual sunrise, his sorrows have accumulated intensity.
