...real. He was slim. and boy, was he shady. Rapper Marshall Mathers (a.k.a. Eminem, a.k.a. the Real Slim Shady) repulsed us all the way to the bank. Well aware that he was that old story--a white boy disproportionately rewarded for mastering a black art form--he earned critical cred with brilliant, gymnastic rhymes. But his lyrics, dripping with hate for women and gays, made parents reel, gave pop-culture-bashing pols a poster boy and posed critics a conundrum: Where does new-school rebellion stop and old-school bigotry begin...
...tired! If we want to preside over more than one screen, we'll open a multiplex. In one week, we had to ban Eminem from our home, coach our 8-year-old through the scary parts of The Wizard of Oz and trick the 3-year-old into believing that our unplugged TV was broken...
...good year for music? I think so, actually. There were some amazing hip-hop albums released-Outkast's Stankonia and Jurassic 5's Quality Control come immediately to mind, while Eminem is undoubtedly talented as hell. In the soul/R&B section, D'Angelo's second album was competent, but the stunner was Jill Scott. Dance music did well by compilations, and even managed a few good albums (Groove Armada's Vertigo, David Holmes' Bow Down to the Exit Sign) in what is generally a singles-driven culture. As for pop-well, some records were set by various assortments of platinum...
