Perfection of a machine which adds Vitamin D to m>lk was announced >by the University of Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation last week. The device consists of a large upright cylinder within which glares a12,000-watt battery of carbon arc lamps. The arcs emit ultraviolet light. The light synthesizes Vitamin D in milk exposed to its irradiation as Wisconsin's Professor Harry Steenbock ; has demonstrated. In operation 3,000 quarts of milk flow in a thin sheet down the inner walls of the cylinder, acquiring Vitamin D in about the same strength as occurs naturally in good...
...Berlin Dr. Arthur Eichengrun, authority on non-inflammable cellulose products, is experimenting with a fire-extinguishing compound with which airplane materials might be impregnated. When subjected to heat, the compound is supposed to emit fire-quenching gases. A test reported by the New York Times last week: one-half of a miniature blimp was impregnated with Dr. Eichengriin's solution, shut off from the other half by a bulkhead. The untreated portion was ignited, blazed away in a flash; the treated half remained intact, kept the whole structure aloft...
Eyes, fingers, blood emit rays which kill cells. As living things die, they produce "necrobiotic" rays. All this several investigators have demonstrated, and from their demonstrations drawn a theory that all living matter radiates energy (TIME, July 4, et ante). But how does this go on? Cleveland's ingenious Surgeon George Washington Crile, who long has been studying the electronics of living things, last week offered his theory to the Central Association of Science & Mathematics Teachers meeting in Cleveland...
Alchemy's new keys to transmutation are the alpha particles of electricity which unstable atoms emit and which unsettle other atoms upon collision. Radium emits alpha particles naturally (also betas and .gammas, the latter helpful in cancer). Artificial streams of alpha particles have been produced from vacuum tubes carrying as high as 650,000 volts. But the production of such voltages is expensive. 'The significance of Dr. Van de Graaff's purchase at the 5f/ & 10^ store ribbon counter was that he had discovered how to produce a current of electricity with light-ning-like force...
...universities students with automobiles often tie strips of inner tubing to the exhausts, which when the motor is suddenly speeded causes them to emit a familiar noise known as "the bird," "corporal's salute," or "Bronx cheer.'' In Mexico City chauffeurs devised a code of horn signals, added this U. S. innovation. One chauffeur was stopped by a policeman named Tomas Gonzalez, sharply reprimanded for a traffic violation. As the chauffeur drove away he stepped on the accelerator, made his horn issue a loud, vulgar noise. Tomas Gonzalez jumped on the car's running board, beat...
