Lionel de Jersey Harvard was born at Lewisham, England, on June 3, 1893, the son of Mr. Thomas Harvard, a prosperous London business man. At the age of eighteen he was entered for Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where many of his ancestors, including John Harvard, had received their education. In the summer of 1911, however, he was persuaded by a group of Harvard graduates to come to America and enter Harvard.
