Francis Gary Powers, 47, airman-turned-spy who parachuted into history in 1960 when the U-2 he piloted on a CIA mission was shot down inside the Soviet Union; in a helicopter crash while on a reporting assignment for KNBC-TV, Los Angeles; in Encino, Calif. His capture, along with that of his photographic and electronic surveillance equipment, caused Nikita Khrushchev to cancel a summit conference with President Eisenhower. Tried publicly in Moscow, Powers was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for espionage, then released in 1962 in exchange for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel...
