Expensive movies from notable directors usually open toward the end of the year, for timely attention in the Oscar season. Martin Scorsese's last three features - Gangs of New York, The Aviator and The Departed, all starring Leonardo DiCaprio - all followed that rule. The latest Scorsese-DiCaprio pairing, Shutter Island, was originally to come out last October, in plenty of time to beat the Academy drum. When the film's distributor, Paramount, abruptly switched the release date to February 2010, the move was taken as an admission that the movie lacked either Oscar gravitas or box-office clout. In vain...
Throughout the series, Bill has displayed the charm, belief and obsessive drive of a born politician - or a dictator, whose ego is rarely clouded by the saving grace of self-doubt. For any man on a God-ordained mission, whether he's a Muslim or a breakaway Mormon, the end justifies the means, however shabby. Earlier this season, he pressured Don, his friend and business partner in the Home Plus stores, to "take the bullet" by outing himself as a polygamist, allowing an unsullied Bill to proceed with his campaign. Friends' lives ruined, his son ostracized: it must...
Until recently, SWIFT had its data servers on U.S. soil, giving American authorities the jurisdiction they needed to access them. But at the end last year, the servers covering European wire transfers were moved to Switzerland and the Netherlands, forcing the U.S. to seek European consent to continue sifting through SWIFT's database of some 8,000 banks. The U.S. says the information, which includes customer names, account numbers and amounts transferred, is needed to root out the various terrorist organizations that move funds around the world. In 2003, officials say the program helped Thai authorities capture Riduan Isamuddin, also...
...tensions didn't end there. Along the back wall 2004 World Poker Champion Greg Raymer stood waiting for a talk radio interview. "Focus on the Family considers poker immoral," Raymer said, gesturing towards the Focus on the Family booth down an aisle. "They have no right to tell me what to do." Raymer is at CPAC representing the Poker Players Alliance, which is lobbying to have a 2005 ban on Internet poker lifted - literally one of the last bills passed by the GOP before they lost control of Congress. "In the privacy of our own homes, consenting adults should...
...country where political demonstrations require official permission and signs of popular unrest are regularly greeted with swarms of riot police, the ElBaradei reception was remarkable. Crowds gathered, chanted, called for an end to Mubarak and even entered the airport. And there were no riot shields in sight. "Mohamed ElBaradei is an international figure," says Samer Shehata, an assistant professor of Arab politics at Georgetown University. "Although I wouldn't put it past the regime, it would be a media blunder to greet him with scores of riot police trying to block supporters from showing their appreciation and welcoming him back...
