...baiters. Innuendoes do fly like javelins over female village smithies who toss anvils for totalitarian states. In 1976, the last Summer Games attended by Americans, the U.S. women swimmers could have taken their thumping by East Germany more gracefully. Some muttered that the Germans' particular star, Kornelia Ender, resembled a man, though she did not look like a man to men, certainly not to Roland Mathes, who married her. He was the G.D.R.'s top male swimmer, and a friendship between Mathes and John Naber, the best American, was evident. "We were on a similar quest," Naber said...

...excruciating. Sam and Diane, the stormy leading couple of Cheers, split up on the sitcom's concluding episode of the season. Webster's uncle (Ben Vereen) suddenly reappeared on that show's finale, setting up a custody battle for the fall. On Dynasty's season ender, the jailhouse door clanged shut on sultry, scheming Alexis (Joan Collins), who is charged (gasp!) with murder, while a car driven by a delirious Fallen Colby (Pamela Sue Martin) on her wedding day careered out of control, heading (gulp!) straight for a truck...

...here in another year, what do I have to look forward to? Will I be able to find an apartment? No. Can I get married? That's a bit unrealistic without a home. What job will pay me enough to live on?" Says Manny Ender, 33, a toy exporter from Tel Aviv: "Even if you drive a taxi in America, at least you make enough for an apartment, entertainment and a visit to Israel once a year...

...well-known story, the movie leaves no room for suspense. When the action drags, it makes little difference whether the crooks wear habits or five o'clock shadow. Nothing new emerges about the Watergate fiasco--except that it is difficult to make an entertaining film out of it. Robert Ender's screenplay, an adaptation of Muriel Spark's novel The Abbess of Crewe, manages only to trivialize the scandal, and any profundity about absolute power corrupting absolutely is lost beneath gossamer one-liners...

...Here," according to Maura Costin, the Kornelia Ender of the Radcliffe swim team, "the decision is yours. They (the Byerly Hallers) basically say: 'You know what we have to offer. If you take it, fine, if not, that's OK too.' At Princeton, I was taken out to dinner and always received letters and telephone calls from the coach. If I had gone to Princeton, I would have felt like I had to swim." Obviously, this low-key approach (what other approach would be used at Harvard?) works (and not just for athletes. We're here, right...
