...Rocco he has reverently revived the techniques he and such directors as Rossellini (Open City) and De Sica (The Bicycle Thief) used in the 1940's. Rocco keeps all the bench marks of Italian neo-realism-the urine-streaked tenement walls, the fields full of rubble, the endless squawk of language ("Ecco! Ecco! Basta! Basta!"). And flaring fitfully in the three-hour brawl of exposed frames that Visconti could not bring himself to edit, there is also some of the power of the postwar masterpieces...

...needlessly apes a silent-film villain-slack jaw, rolling eyes and all. Whole episodes are unprofitably murky. A question at the core of the film -whether corrosive city is preferable to deadening land-is never convincingly asked, although Rocco is supposed to end with its answer. Worst is the endless mayhem. ...Long Count. Testifying seated in his cage, Eichmann fired his words out in an endless, tumbling torrent. Asked to give the date he returned to Prague from Berlin, Eichmann responded with a 250-word answer. After a spectacular, 225-word sentence whose meaning, perhaps intentionally, escaped everyone in the court, both Judge Landau and Defense Attorney Robert Servatius warned Eichmann to speak to the point. "I know the German verb comes at the end of the sentence," said Landau, "but we are having to wait too long for the verb...

...Fascist Italy In Two Women, mother (Sophia Loren) and daughter (Eleonora Brown) prove that in World War II Italy, only those who suffer can love. La Dolce Vita is a sprawling, formless masterpiece of modern Rome's spiritual depravity and sexual excess, and L'Avventura is another endless but masterly dissection of the malignant tedium that grips contemporary Italy's empty-souled profligates...
