...about your grammatical errors while ignoring your more substantive points. Edwin Newman, a veteran of the NBC news staff, certainly has a wonderful sense of the use--I should say misuse--of language. No one--politician, journalist, president, businessman, baseball coach, restaurateur, taxi driver--emerges unscathed from a seemingly endless catalogue of embarrassing, boorish, pretentious, dangerous and innocuous lapses and errors Newman records from his over 20 years experience in reporting. There is the actress who told him she hoped she wouldn't be an "escapegoat" if her show failed. There is the political organizer who describes elections...

...immense story that Richard Collier (The City That Wouldn 't Die, The Sands of Dunkirk) attempts to tell. He has selected perhaps the only popular method possible: a compact narrative out of which the reader may pull facts and anecdotes as if from an endless Pandora's box Of Kleenex...

...there has been no refuge from the boyish image, because with the peach-skin complexion and endless energy, Horowitz seems younger at 32 than most of the undergraduates in his electronics course, Physics 123. While they slump unshaven and bleary-eyed on their lab stools on the second floor of the Science Center, Horowitz stalks the room in short, quick steps, like a freshly-scrubbed Boy Scout armed with a calculator instead of a pocket knife. He pushes aside his thick, perpetually mussed hair, and talks in bursts about electronic circuits and gadgets...

...those undramatic notions whose miraculous qualities have faded with familiarity. Bronowski restores the vital and mysterious dimension with a simple tactic. He precedes his superb little essay on the domestication of wheat and animals in Jericho with a study of the Bakhtiari nomads of Iran, whose endless search for pasturage precludes the development of any culture worthy of the name. He then focuses on other nomads who domesticated only one animal - the horse - and turned it into the basis of a new and terrible art, that of warfare. Bronowski is critical of ethologists who insist that man has some inborn...

THERE IS NO coherent plot to Box Man, although there appears to be an extremely complicated code beneath its surface that, like DNA, offers endless possibilities and possible endlessness. The novel begins with several pages on how to construct and live in a box, and then shifts to the narrator, who is scribbling his story on the inside of his box. Because we are all locked in our own boxes, this annoyingly anonymous fellow asserts, we are left to our imaginations, and they become just as valuable as the so-called real world we see around us. They are perhaps...
