During all the dark years of World War I, Oswald Spengler in a dank Munich tenement suffered from endless headache while he composed Der Untergang des Abendlandes. During the '20s, readers in seven languages suffered likewise in the effort to follow its vast erudition, cosmic vision, Teutonic mysticism. Americans read it as The Decline of the West. Because its title suggests doom & disintegration, and because it was the gospel of the Nazi intellectuals, The Decline of the West is perhaps the most misunderstood of the influential books of the 20th Century. ...that has been the driving force in the creation of a conscious youth movement in America. To our elders, reared in an earlier era of unmitigated confidence, youth's readiness to question that All's Right With the World has smacked of "radicalism" and "skepticism." ...French Department should make this film required movie-going, and that is no slur upon its entertainment value. In almost every scene there is a slice of provincial France. The earnest, effeminate priest and the super-rationalistic school-teacher involve themselves in endless, fantastic arguments. A two-for-a-nickel marquis, complete with gloves and plus-fours, drops into town now and then from his chateau, to have a quick one with the boys at the "Club." There are also plenty of village dim-wits, who won't speak to one another because their parents and grandparents wouldn't either...
