...brought the jurors to the edge of exhaustion, and now, especially, that the end of the trial glimmers on the horizon like some incredible mirage, one might expect the lawyers to simmer down and get on with it. But last week a series of procedural wrangles, surprise rulings and endless bickering proved once again that conventional wisdom never applies in this epic case...

...fact is, victimhood is a very valuable status to hold these days. We seem to be more defined by what has happened or been done to us than by what we have achieved. Television talk-shows provide 15 minutes of fame to an endless parade of molestees, abusees, 12-steppers and indeed anyone else who can make us feel inadequate by virtue of having suffered more than we. As they share their pain and are applauded by the studio audience, we are bombarded with the message that victimhood = fame + recognition, and since we have also been taught that fame + recognition...

After years of war and "ethnic cleansing," the brutal dialectic of aggression, retaliation and reconciliation seemed to have been telescoped into a matter of days. There is still a long...

There was high drama again at the endless-and, in recent weeks, tedious-O.J. Simpson murder trial. The possibility of a mistrial was raised when a visibly emotional Judge Lance Ito agreed with the prosecution that he might be unable to act impartially if 11 hours of taped interviews with prosecution witness Detective Mark Fuhrman were introduced as evidence. The interviews allegedly contain derogatory comments about Ito's wife Captain Margaret York, who is the L.A.P.D.'s highest-ranking female officer. (More to the evidentiary point, Simpson defense lawyers contend that the tapes contain passages in which Fuhrman discusses...
