...Terror Cricket is an 800-pound gorilla that has smothered all other sports in India ("Subcontinental Shift," June 30 - July 7). It hogs the media, sponges all the sponsorship, and makes idols of mediocre, inconsistent and narcissistic athletes. Even the sport's bandwagon followers manage to spend hours discussing endless inanities about the turn of a ball or the long hair of a wicketkeeper. If India produces any world-class contenders in, say, chess or shooting or racing, it is a tribute to their doggedness and talent that they flourish despite the specter of cricket looming above them like some...

Standing on the seemingly endless ice cap, where blinding white stretches in all directions, I find it hard to imagine ever losing Greenland. But the island has surrendered an average of 150 billion tons of ice over the past four summers, melting away like the cubes of glacier--dating back to 1816--that the scientists drink in glasses of whiskey at a farewell party. As it warms, we'll probably lose more, but the hope is that through projects like NEEM, we will finally understand our climatic past before meeting our uncertain future. The scientists here think we're running...

...concourse of the Byelorussian-Radial subway station on the Moscow circle line, with its white-ceilinged dome and brilliant electric lights, and opposite us two parallel escalators, thickly packed with Muscovites, rising from below. It seemed as though they were all looking at me! They kept coming in an endless ribbon from down there, from the depths of ignorance--on and on beneath the gleaming dome, reaching toward me for at least one word of truth--so why did I keep silent...

...white, blinding and endless. At NEEM we're 77 degrees latitude north of the equator and nearly 2,500 meters above sea level, all of it accumulated snow and ice - some 130,000 years worth, which is what the scientists at NEEM eventually hope to drill through. The polar horizon stretches to all sides without landmarks, save for the black and red flags that mark the boundaries of the camp, the red sleeping tents and the heated main dome, a geodesic wooden structure that is the kitchen, conference center and overall heart of NEEM. The result is scary, when...

...with liberal amounts of Danish mixed in. When we arrive, we are given breakfast, and we soon learn that the preparation and consumption of food takes up a significant slice of time at NEEM. It might be the constant sunlight, which gives the sense that the days are (literally) endless, or the European flavor of the camp, but life at NEEM seems to move at a leisurely place. (Todd Sowers, an American professor from Penn State University, chalks it up to the latter - and he notes, "It's a lot more...
