Results from a ten-year study using 52 rhesus monkeys were equally alarming: two of the animals developed cancer of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus). Upjohn's own scientists concluded in 1978 that the cancer was "likely related to treatment with Depo-Provera." Later that year the FDA refused to allow Upjohn to market the drug as a contraceptive, though it is approved for treating certain diseases...

...Cancer of the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) can usually be cured if it is diagnosed early enough. But that is a big if. The simple Pap smear, which is effective for detecting cancer of the cervix (neck of the uterus), cannot always pick up endometrial cancer. Dilatation and curettage, used to obtain cells from the uterine lining for analysis, requires hospitalization and is impractical unless the disease is already suspected.
