Relics of Feudalism. Hughes begins his history of the time of troubles as history itself begins-in apparent inconsequence. Hughes does not endow his characters with his own hindsight but sets them moving blindly into orbit. Augustine Penry-Herbert is the protagonist. In 1923, he is a young aristocrat, just out of Oxford, who spends his time shooting geese and snipe on the wild marshes of the coast of north Wales.
