...like the late Ossip Gabrilowitsch and the contemporary Jose Iturbi, have been even more famed as instrumental soloists than as orchestral maestros. Still fewer can, like Germany's Richard Strauss, combine the abilities of a brilliant conductor with those of an eminent composer. Burly, slope-shouldered Rumanian Georges Enesco, who replaced John Barbirolli last week as guest conductor of New York's Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra, is probably the only famous musical figure today who is equally noted as a composer, a conductor and a soloist...
Last week, while the Philharmonic's pudgy head violinist, Mishel Piastro, laid down his fiddle and picked up the baton to conduct the orchestral accompaniment, Conductor Enesco laid down his baton and picked up a fiddle to play the solo. Carnegie Hall's audience and the critical pundits found his fiddling in Bach's Concerto in A Minor for Violin and String Orchestra the last word in intelligent interpretation. Composer Enesco will again play a double part on next week's Philharmonic programs when he conducts his own Rumanian Rhapsody...
...station hookup over NBC. The Mellon family began to take an interest. Andrew Mellon's Son Paul became treasurer. Last May the Board began to lay elaborate plans for a 20-week season with conductors like Walter Damrosch, Otto Klemperer, Eugene Goossens, Carlos Chavez, Georges Enesco. Although $200,000 were still wanting and their plans had not crystallized, the Board refused to continue Modarelli in a higher rank than assistant conductor, would not give him a definite conducting schedule. From Wheeling, W. Va., last week Conductor...

S. supremacy under the vigorous baton of young John Barbirolli and assorted guest conductors like Georges Enesco and Igor Stravinsky. With Toscanini back, in command of the first-desk orchestral talent which rich NBC already has and can add to, there will be in the land another competitor for symphonic supremacy, with the continent instead of Carnegie Hall for its auditorium...
Today, Georges Enesco remains a great violinist and a gifted composer. Rumanians consider him their best conductor as well. To him they owe the beginnings of a true Rumanian school in music. For eleven years Enesco was Yehudi Menuhin's violin teacher, and the two broadcast a violin duet together last fortnight in Manhattan. Prodigy Menuhin, now 20, says: "In Enesco I have discovered what I have been searching for all my lifetime...
