Whatever the cause - Viagra, midlife divorce, online dating or simple ignorance - studies suggest that STDs are no longer just an affliction of the young. A study published online last week by the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections adds to that growing body of evidence. Researchers at England's West Midlands Health Protection Agency found that in less than a decade, STD rates had more than doubled among people ages 45 and older. And Dr. Babatunde Olowokure, an author of the study, thinks that figure may be low. "These observations are based on a small proportion of people who actually attend clinics...
Students and their families spend more than ever to go to private four-year colleges in the U.S. - last year alone, average annual tuition fees to such institutions shot up by 6% to just over $22,000. In comparison, fees in England, although higher than in much of the rest of Europe, are modest: the government only introduced its current system in 2006, and has capped fees at roughly $6,000 per student. Even after adding the state's own contribution - and until the government reviews fee levels next year - Cambridge is short by some $10,000 for each student...
...Appropriate" is the key word - especially since a review study published last November in the New England Journal of Medicine determined that as many as one-third of all CT scans performed in the United States are unnecessary. The authors take issue with the "perhaps 20 million adults and, crucially, more than 1 million children per year in the United States [who] are being irradiated unnecessarily." Part of the problem, the authors say, is that patients are being prescribed multiple, unneeded CT scans, a predicament that could be avoided with better communication between physicians. "Having the same CT scan twice...
...meets the eye, so we'll keep going. Start with the simple fact that a truly unified political party doesn't need a unity rally. It's a long, slow bus ride down a winding two-lane road, over hills, through pines and pastures, to reach this remote New England village. The fuel that drives the bus is worry, and the worry stems from division...
...deal for Mugabe to share power with his enemies in exchange for amnesty from prosecution in an international tribunal. It was only last week that Britain stripped Mugabe of the honorary knighthood conferred on him by Queen Elizabeth II in 1994, and canceled a planned cricket series between England and Zimbabwe. The country's athletes are headed to next month's Olympics in Beijing; among them is Kirsty Coventry, who won a swimming gold medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004, earning her the affectionate nickname "golden girl" from Zimbabwe. By contrast, South Africa's athletes were banned from Olympic...
