Anticipating a surge in "distance learning," cable entrepreneur Glenn Jones in 1987 founded the Mind Extension University. Based in Englewood, Colo., it beams college-credit courses to 36,000 students across the country, under the aegis of such established institutions as the University of Minnesota and Penn State.
