...more restful place: the McCain ranch. His behind-the-scenes pictures--including the one this week of McCain barbecuing tenderloin--add a dimension of intimacy to the McCain family story. This week's striking cover portrait--like the one last week of Barack Obama--is by the great English photographer Platon, who usually chats with his subjects about pop music. Platon says McCain was "funny and cheeky" and said he was an Abba fan. As always, our coverage was orchestrated by assistant managing editor Michael Duffy, whose vast experience--as White House correspondent, Washington bureau chief and presidential historian--enables...

...September 2006 publication. It has been translated into a half-dozen languages and is being adapted for film. In South Korea and Italy, the book has generated the same sort of enthusiasm and devotion that made it a publishing phenomenon in France. Now, with the release of an English translation on Sept. 7, Elegance is pursuing a goal that has proved devilishly elusive for modern French novelists: success in the U.S. and Britain. She says her cast of "improbable characters and clashing perspectives has managed to interest an equally improbable range of readers from very different backgrounds." ...anyone's guess why a California lockup is housing an unreconstructed Limey like Statham; he's one of those English stars who shows up every few decades (like Cary Grant or Michael Caine) and refuses to drop his working-class, home-town accent. Anderson must have figured that the star of the Transporter series, and The Bank Job and a couple of Guy Ritchie gangland fantasies, would bring along his action-film bona fides. Which he does. Also his impressive torso. One of the movie's few moments of relative repose is a long, loving shot of Statham exercising...
