...movie may turn into a genuine oddity: a realistically grounded action piece. But for this version, directed by Louis Leterrier, that's not to be. Betty's dad (William Hurt) is a general more grim than Strangelovian, who wants to weaponize the Hulk. He enlists a gung-ho Russian-English commando named Blonsky (Tim Roth) to chase him down, but once they all stop running around Rio and retreat to a more generically presented U.S., the idea that I needed a nice little rest began nagging at me. For the truth is that action sequences have become as predictable...

...creature now known as the unicorn. The wild ox, a now-extinct creature rendered in bas relief profiles with one horn, was translated in Greek as monokeros or one-horned. In the Latin bible of the Christian world that became unicornos and "unicorn" by the time the English translators of King James got to work. And so, God impresses His power upon Job by saying, "Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee...

...doughnut of a stadium stuffed with 30,000 supporters for France's matchup with Romania. Neither the French fans not their team seemed all that impressed, and the latter played that way. France was pathetic in the 0-0 stalemate. If this game were a cuisine, it would be English, and no one would eat it. Sure, it's difficult to play against the Romanians. The men in gold stacked 9 or 10 players behind the ball at times and dared the French to break them down. "It was difficult," admitted Claude Makelele, "there was no room to play." Instead...

...English-language paperback edition of Parasite Eve comes just in time for summer getaway reading. The editors at Vertical Press haven't weeded out the slew of mistranslations from the original hardcover English edition. But some of these botched phrases - including real puzzlers like "the unreality of a shimmer at the bottom of a cascade of sunlight" and "pessimism encountered the warmth lingering in his hands from the night before in subtle billows of conflict" - inadvertently achieve a kind of prose poetry reminiscent of the great Dada-influenced poet Chuya Nakahara. Grumbling about their incomprehensibility just keeps you from enjoying...

...Polite, and addressing the judge with confidence in clear, slightly broken English, Mohammed persisted in speaking to fellow prisoners and made clear he plans to follow "God's law." At the close of the morning session, he was asked to approve a drawing of him rendered by a sketch artist. "Look at my FBI photo. Fix the nose. Then bring it back to me," he reportedly answered. Mohammed said he rejected legal representation from U.S. military lawyers under the command of President Bush, who he charged "is waging a crusade in Afghanistan and Iraq and our holy lands." Chanting verses...
