...picture forms showing 60 years of hectic freedom leading to powerlessness, ennui and immobility. Yet the picture is exaggerated. It is convenient to think of a time in the thrall of science as absent of religious faith, but one look at the millions of Poles, Guatemalans, Irishmen, Americans and Englishmen drawn to the recent visits of Pope John Paul II suggests that all the mysteries of existence do not bubble up only in laboratories. One reason the martial-law government of Poland so fears the Pope's influence in that country is that he reaches feelings in the people...
During the course of the evening, we watch the despotic but disorganized King Paramount learn the English version of monarchy. Traipsing around on stage with him are the highly malleable citizens of Utopia, two sycophantic advisors, six stereotypic Englishmen, and three slightly dizzy princesses, the eldest of whom has just returned from finishing school in England. During his 73 years, he turned out more than 50 plays, half a dozen books, many short stories, innumerable essays and reviews, and songs as varied as Mad Dogs and Englishmen and I'll Follow My Secret Heart. He also found time to act, perform in cabaret and direct. He may have partied at night, but he always composed the morning after...
