...this warhouse, the Gilbert and Sullivan Players took Pinafore for granted; they didn't put in the energy it needs. Theirs is still an over-whelmingly competent production, with superb singing--one worth seeing of you lovePinafore, love Gilbert and Sullivan, or just love watching all those funny, cute Englishmen acting so very English. But then, the Loeb is sold out already. Ironically, enough people love Pinafore as a harmless trifle that it can be de-fanged with impunity. Who would want to scare away all those big middle-class audiences by staging any "language strong," anyway...
...book takes place in India, where Alter grew up (although he went west for his education). The protagonist, not surprisingly a young man, comes from that hybridization of Englishmen and Hindustani that Georg Orwell described so brilliantly 35 years ago. Alter's hero feels a similar sense of class and cultural instability as those Orwell less charitably referred to as half-breeds. Though Italians call his style Il Look Inglese-to which stiff upper-collared Englishmen might well object-Armani has managed to steer the national aspiration to la bella figura toward an image of bohemian nonchalance. His bellows-pocketed, unlined suits are sellouts in the U.S. at prices ranging from...
Because he conceived his mission as didactic, Blake's ruling passion was exactness. Nothing infuriated him more than the idea that visions might be cloudy or woolly. "I know too well that a great majority of Englishmen are fond of The Indefinite which they Measure by New ton's Doctrine of the Fluxions of an Atom, A Thing that does not Exist ... a Line or Lineament is not formed by Chance; a Line is a Line in its Minutest Subdivisions . . . God keep me from the Divinity of Yes & No too, The Yea Nay Creeping Jesus, from supposing...
