...soon desisted while Balch took in a fair amount of rope. The '86 anchor now had some trouble in straightening out his legs. At the end of two minutes '88 had about a foot of rope. The '88 men now took a little rest, leaning back and seeming to enjoy the prospect. '86 tried to recover an inch or two but the '88 team continued to take in rope. At the end of four minutes '86 had let out some eighteen inches. A few more powerful heaves now settled the ludicrous contest, and '88 won with over two feet...
