...other difficulties mar Brady's work, such as his tendency to rely on too much direct quotation from Boswell's compendious papers, as opposed to paraphrasing or explicating it. To nitpick, one feels another shortcoming is the dearth of illustrations accompanying the text to enliven the famous names. Many prominently mentioned members of Boswell's circle, Goldsmith, Burke, Temple, and most egregiously Boswell's father, wife and children, are not included. Neither, of course, are paintings of London or Edinburgh...
...lake effect (DLE). During early spring, when a storm moves into the area, the clouds over the lake are often colder than the water. As a result, warm air laden with moisture rises into the clouds, intensifying the storm. Normally, the most significant impact of the DLE is to enliven the skiing season with a few extra feet of snow. But in the 1870s the lake swelled to an alltime high of 4,211.6 ft. above sea level. Henry Awards as a dependable fiction barometer, it has always been the stodgier culling of the year's best. After longtime series editor Martha Foley died in 1977, Houghton Mifflin tried to "enliven the series and broaden its scope" by introducing annual guest editors. In the five years since the innovation, a number of editorial biases have been expressed, and this year Anne Tyler, author of Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, got her chance...
...General Services Administration is considering plans to further enliven the Federal Triangle by introducing more commercial areas. Says Henry Berliner, chairman of the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation: "Now we're not just a place to work, but to eat, to shop and, if residence properties are built, a place to live as well." That may well be some day, but for now Developer Evans has less farsighted preoccupations. "When word gets around next summer among tourists," he happily predicts, "we're going to be mobbed." Taxpayers, prepare to count your profits, and your blessings...
