...strength of the production undoubtedly also lies in its supporting cast. Sarah Eno '03 and Ashley McCants '02 deserve special praise for their resounding performances as Valentin's love Marta and Molina's mother. Their duet in "Dear One" is especially unforgettable. Brian Gatten too demands an awesome presence on stage as the Warden. Kudos also to Scott Rowen '02 and Adam Robbins '00 for strong performances...
...focus on the craft of songwriting, you know it's coming off a lemon, as U2 is. But Pop was the anomaly in a career that's been dedicated, and now rededicated, to making great rock music. The 11 tracks, produced by U2 veterans Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, reveal a band exhausted with its own irony, and aging, if not always gracefully, at least honestly. Beautiful Day and When I Look at the World are Bono full-voice blasters, while the melancholic Kite and New York are about people who still haven't found what they're looking...
Boldly appropriating both the format of Citizen Kane (inquiring reporter seeks the secrets of a pop star) and the legends of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Brian Eno and Roxy Music, Haynes fashions a fresco of seductive grotesques--notably the Iggy-esque Curt Wild, whom Ewan McGregor inhabits as a writhing punk- sprite. The Bowie-ish star, Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), is consumed by success, whereas the real Bowie always looked in control of his eminence. But, hey, you go to a musical for the numbers, which are brilliantly conceived and played. Does the milieu seem starched, grandiose, fake...
...Wrong, moving easily from reggae chants to diva vocals to galloping jungle, came out when everyone was looking for Pearl Jam derivatives. Animal Rights, Moby's follow up, disappointed newly techno-hungry critics by being an almost frightening marriage of ambient and punk. While releasing excellent remixes of Brian Eno, Jam and Spoon and Orbital, he's been sneered for remixing Ozzy Ozbourne, Soundgarden and Metallica. Moby plays on all levels and nowhere is this more apparent than in his live shows...
...formats, and passes into a realm normally reserved for serious compositional work. This is both his strength and greatest weakness--his music has much greater depth than acts such as The Prodigy, but it is probably destined to never achieve much commercial notice. In the same sense that Brian Eno extended the world of rock music with releases like Another Green World in the 70s, James extends the role of electronic music today...
