Shoulders are sore and heads not quite clear this morning in many quarters of the Yard. A long trip in a cold rumble seat, a rather late evening somewhere-in-Boston, not quite enough blankets and no mattress at all do not form quite the proper prelude for a holiday. That nevertheless is the program of a large percentage of New Haven visitors when they come to Cambridge every odd fall...
...course, simple enough to make fun of the cinema magnates for their insistence on backstage and pseudo-collegiate subject matter, but it is totally unfair not to realize that there is much to be said on their side. The filmgoers have demonstrated with some conclusiveness that they want frequent musical numbers in their pictures, yet with equal certainty they have shown that they want the songs to be embedded in the plot with some show of realism. A stage musical comedy can interrupt the story with a song cue and introduce, with no apologies at all, tenors, sopranos and dancing...
...starred. Here was a striking and original dramatic idea about an arrogant ventriloquist who could only be human when talking through the mouth of his dummy and finally became so jealous of the little figure that he broke it and felt himself a murderer. Since the story belonged legitimately enough backstage there had to be a series of chorus numbers, with the result that the drama was entirely submerged. Most screen plots, of course, are not worth much to a shot...
...still changeable. As potentially Harvard men, the undergraduates should be permitted to have some influence in deciding the many issues which the erection of this building will undoubtedly call up. The Harvard of the present is replete with the mistakes of a short-sighted past, and they indicate forcibly enough that decisions for the future should not be based on sudden conclusions...
...plot of it is so intricate, but also well worked out, that it keeps the audience in constant suspense as to how the love affairs of Marion Donnell will finally turn out. The pathos of the picture, although at times it borders on the usual movie sentimentalism, is enough to force the feminine part of the audience to bring out its handkerchiefs...
