...sportsmen's statement, and the Buchmanites' editing of Sportswriter Vidmer's comment, were egregious examples of an Oxford Group technique which has slowly matured during the years Dr. Buchman has been at work. For Buchmanites it has not been enough to propagate, among "key people," the doctrine of God's direct and special "guidance" of his favorites, and the advantages of living according to the four Buchmanite standards of Absolute Honesty, Love, Purity and Unselfishness. The not-quite-absolutely-honest technique has also been to involve newsworthy non-Buchmanites, simply by getting them to agree publicly...
Methodist doctrines and ritual are flexible enough so that little controversy arose over their definition. But over a lengthy and liberal social creed submitted to the Conference, there was a sputter. Delegate Alfred Mossman Landon objected to the section which promised the support of the Methodist Church to conscientious objectors. Youngish Delegate Lloyd E. Foster of East Orange, N. J. shouted that only the "grey-haired and baldheaded" objected to the section. Red-faced, Delegate Landon shouted: "I submit that the argument is a cowardly one!" Columnist Broun will be received into the Church late this month. Thereafter...

Compton; University of Chicago Physics Professor Dr. Arthur Compton; Mrs. Herbert Compton Rice, principal of Christian College in Allahabad, India). Grover Aloysius Whalen absented himself long enough to chitchat on Major Bowes's Amateur Hour, received 162 listener-votes as "best amateur," more than 50 of them from California...
Several years ago, they had a hunch that the immature hearts and blood vessels of epileptics did not supply enough oxygen to their brains. Hence the convulsions. This theory fitted in with the general fact that many epileptics do not have any brain abnormalities which might be considered responsible for the seizures. To test their hunch, the doctors placed 14 epileptic children under the care of a coach, who helped them develop "athlete's heart" through a strenuous program of rowing, running, basketball, football. At the same time the patients were placed on the traditional low-water diet...
