...sunny Aix-en-Provence, the morbid were up at dawn one day last week, hurrying to the square in front of the ancient Hotel de Ville. Squads of blue-clad soldiers were already there, keeping the crowds as far as possible from an open space in the square's centre. Soon a rattling wagon drove up, loaded with red-painted timbers, ropes, boards. Trained like circus roustabouts, a crew of workmen sprang into action. In three-quarters of an hour uprights and braces were screwed together, the pulley strung, platform, trip lever and block slipped into place. A bale...
...bullets. Thanks to Georges Sarret's legal knowledge, the trial dragged on month after month. Finally last October he was condemned to death, the Schmidt sisters to ten years at hard labor. And so last week he went to meet Mme Guillotine before the Town Hall of Aix-en-Provence. The end of drama was not yet. Strapped quickly to the board, he was pushed beneath the knife. The executioner tripped the lever, the triangular blade crashed down-and jammed, half way down. "Imbeciles!" bellowed Murderer Sarret. "Be quick can't you!" For ten minutes he lay with...
Virgin Birth & Immaculate Conception Sirs: In the March 12 issue of your most interesting magazine, in a footnote to the article en- titled "Joseph's Son," reference is made to Kenan's Life of Christ. Your writer speaks of Renan as one "who also rejected the Immaculate Conception." It is very evident that your writer has fallen into the popular error of confusing the Virgin Birth with the Immaculate Conception. The doctrine of the Virgin Birth is one that is accepted by most Christians, whether Catholic or Protestant, while the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is one which...
...those who enjoy romantic lapses into the eighteenth century with elusive visions of elegant soirees with flickering tapers and the sparkling tones of the clavichord, the recording of Hadyn's "Concerto en Fa pour clavecin et orchestre" should be an especial delight. A small orchestra accompanies Mme. Roesgen-Champion in such a manner that the clavecin and the timbres of the woodwinds and strings blend together unusually well. There is no profundity in this bit of Haydn; even the andante is a very short and simple tune. "His Master's Voice" has also released a recording of Bach's Double...
...Janowski's sleigh is waiting. Heat Lightning (Warner). This small investigation of goings-on at a desert gas-station is sharper and more honest than most one-room melodramas manufactured in Hollywood. Under Mervyn Le Roy's perceptive direction there are vigorous and amusing sequences: the arrival, en route from Reno to the coast, of two nervous, overdressed divorcees with their languid chauffeur (Frank McHugh ) ; an itinerant bankrobber's bashful greeting to a brash female hitchhiker; a Mexican peasant apologizing for the Ford which contains his wife, children, chicken coop and guitar. Aline MacMahon ably portrays...
