Investigators said Pilot Chester Baker, owner of the Mooney, and Instructor Paul Lietz had been practicing "touch and go" landings and takeoffs at an airport near Kearns, Utah. At about 12:50 p.m. Baker touched down briefly, then lifted off and climbed sharply upward. This time, a remote-controlled bomb concealed in a blue Peugeot was detonated as Chamoun's motorcade passed through an East Beirut suburb en route to a meeting of Christian power brokers. The explosion sent his bulletproof + car flying more than 50 ft. across the pavement. Miraculously, the car landed on its wheels, and Chamoun escaped with only cuts and scratches. "God is protecting us," he concluded. Others were not so lucky. ...While en route to India last November, Mikhail Gorbachev made his first visit as Communist Party leader to Soviet Central Asia. At Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, Gorbachev gave a speech to local party officials on such familiar problems as economic inefficiency and official corruption.
