...sharply cut and crimped hairdo, wows the audience, but in the end the lithe and vibrant Cynthia Leshomo, 32, takes the crown. Not to worry. "I'd rather not win," says Chitombo, who fell short in 2003 as well. "As long as I don't win I can enter again and I get a week of having my hair done and trying on new dresses. It's a lot of fun." What does it feel like to be a beauty queen for a day? Chitombo smiles: "I feel like a beauty queen every day of my life...

...onto the scene. The mocking figure at lower right is the Roman proconsul who ordered the crucifixion, dressed in the armor of Caravaggio's day. At left is a peasant woman with a goiter who represents the faithful. Between them Caravaggio has left open a space for us to enter the picture and choose sides. Naples was also where Caravaggio painted The Flagellation of Christ, part of his attempt to bring his innovations in line with the conventions of classical form. With this attitude, one can hardly find fault in Lawrence’s similar treatment of religious motifs and storylines. Few people will enter or leave the Catholic Church after having seen the movie, but neither effect was probably on the movie’s agenda anyway. Maybe, just this once, a very average movie will be taken for just that, and neither an outraged religious radicalism nor a dazzling success at the box office will proclaim the latest sign of the Apocalypse...
