...that at New York. College athletics are intended for students, and the great majority of Harvard men would fail to derived any benefit from football if all championship matches were transferred to New York. A comparatively small number of men could afford to take the trip, and the enthusiasm of the rest would fall off when they felt that they were never to witness the one great annual match. It is enough to have the boat races rowed at an inaccessible distance. This is submitted to on account of the necessity of finding suitable water; but the college will...

...editorials devote considerable space to athletics: the class races and the class ball games are made the text of paragraphs calling attention to the revival in enthusiasm for athletics at Harvard. This is tributed, not to the revival of class feeling, but to the new responsibility assumed by Harvard in standing alone and to the new facilities in the shape of Norton's Field and the Weld boat house. ...threatening weather. The college showed its appreciation of the races by braving the rain and turning out in large numbers to cheer the rival eights. It was especially gratifying to notice the freshman tug. The class showed a much better spirit by chartering the tug and keeping up their enthusiasm to the finish, than was manifest two days ago; and the freshman crew proved that they deserved the support and confidence of their class. They made a plucky fight from start to finish. They need feel no discouragement at not finishing better than third, for so close a pull against...
