When Chicago held its fair, the whole city was steamed up-not only the concessionaires and tradesmen, direct beneficiaries, but citizens whose enthusiasm was born of civic pride. The anomaly of the New York fair is that most New Yorkers have been genuinely bored with it. For the cosmopolitan conglomeration that is New York City has less civic interest, is less given to boosterism, than any place in the country. The sole reason New York has a fair, let alone the biggest in history, is that a small, hardheaded group high-pressured the city, the nation and most of Europe...
...orator, scarcely a figure calculated to arouse much personal enthusiasm. Herr Himmler's primary function in Naziland has so far been to be neither seen nor heard but to be felt. The housewife who puts quilted covers over her telephone for fear the Gestapo can listen in on household conversations even when the receiver catch is down has felt Herr Himmler's not-too-remote presence. The German who uses prearranged codes in letters to his relatives in or out of the country decidedly feels Policeman Himmler's existence. The discontented merchant, the dissident Party member...
...brilliant success of the show the cast is mainly responsible. Their enthusiasm, their esprit de corps, their sense of comedy, all made the audience forget they didn't know Greek and have a grand time anyway watching some of the best horse-play this side of Broadway, a Sophic Tucker version of a Greek poem, an angel on roller-skates, a Heracles in striped pyjamas, and above all, Harvard as the Cloudcuckootown! Backing up the cast was an original musical score and masks, costumes, backdrops, done with skill and rare humor. Congratulations should also go to a gentleman named Aristophanes...
Civic boosters are likely to damn his book, to complain at the bleakness of the picture he draws. Dilemma of Five Cities is that Author Leighton's enthusiasm for the color and gusto of U. S. life is always at war with his knowledge of the violence of much of U. S. history. But in telling the story in local, rather than national terms, Five Cities suggests that he has tapped one of the richest of unworked U. S. historical mines...
...mont's life has a freshness and enthusiasm rare in the records of U. S. public men. He was a galloping, theatrical character-when his first daughter was born, he spread a ragged, wind-whipped flag over Jessie's bed, saying, "This flag was raised over the highest peak of the Rocky Mountains. . . ." Even his calculations were naive and almost innocent, as when he stealthily evaded the War Department when he took a howitzer (for which he had no use) on his third expedition to the West. Courageous, spirited, good-humored and humorless, he seems in Allan Nevins...
