...Erdogan seized on the chance to lift this ban with an enthusiasm that he hasn't shown for any of the many other democratic reforms Turkey needs. The government has shelved plans to lift Article 301, which makes it a crime to denigrate "Turkishness," under which writers and intellectuals like Nobel prizewinner Orhan Pamuk have been tried. Erdogan has made little progress in addressing the grievances of Turkey's Kurdish minority. If he is really out to prove his democratic mettle, these are the kinds of issues he needs to address...

...however, end with the tote bag. The more enthralled I became with John, the more his enthusiasm for the Bard rubbed off on me. Somewhere over the course of my stalking-filled semester, I fell in love with the books inside the bag—Othello and Hamlet earned prominent places on the shelf I had previously reserved for the Harry Potter canon, and eventually scored a shelf of their own. The talking cameras are the latest advance in a country that's embraced video surveillance with an enthusiasm that would make Orwell shudder. Liberty, a civil liberties group, conservatively estimates there are 4.2 million CCTV cameras currently in operation in the UK, one for every 14 residents. Anyone living or working in London will likely be captured on camera 300 times a day, the group claims. Indeed...

Even if McCain was by temperament a coalition-builder, unifying the G.O.P. would be less of a challenge in the fall than simply getting them out of the house. A dispirited Republican electorate might vote out of anger against Hillary, but they won't vote out of enthusiasm for McCain. And Obama voters will be nothing if not enthusiastic. For all the strengths he brings to a November election - and his independence from the G.O.P. base is one of them - in this strange convergence of events, it now seems like the triumph of a Hillary-aligned Democratic establishment...
