...same is true, he believes, with the U.S. view of the Prohibition era. So he plans to treat U.S. audiences to his own bloodshot view of the good old gangster days. But before he hangs up his spurs, he wants to make one last, big, $7,000,000 epic called Once Upon a Time, There Was America (titles were never his strong point), which he says "won't leave any more to be said about the West." It will be filmed, curiously enough, in Arizona...
...country in which brutal, irrational force can erupt any minute on a massive scale. This view is reinforced by the sheer driving energy of the U.S. It seems confirmed by the American folklore of violence-the Western and the gangster saga-which audiences all over the world worship as epic entertainment and as a safe refuge for dreams of lawless freedom. In a very different way, the view of America the Violent is also reinforced by the Vietnamese war, in which critics both at home and abroad profess to see a growing strain of American brutality...
Producer-Director Ivan Tors, who with such TV series as Flipper and Daktari has made animals his livestock in trade (TIME, June 16), combines two supposedly potent ingredients into one wide-screen epic: The Dark Continent and the Wild West. In Africa, the world's champeen rodeo rider (Hugh O'Brian) and his Navaho sidekick come to Kenya to round up a bunch of wild beasts for an altruistic rancher (John Mills). Object: to create a meat source for the protein-poor Masai...

An Arab general does not say he will attack with 50 tanks; he is more likely to mention 50,000. Arabs do not want to admit Israelis can shoot; they say enemy guns use a new "homing device." Damascus radio is not just critical of U.S. policy; it depicts "fat, mad" President Johnson "drinking Arab blood" and warns, "O Johnson...
PROKOFIEV: WAR AND PEACE (3 LPs; Heliodor). Tolstoy's epic is not the easiest assignment in operatic composing, but by concentrating on the love story of Prince Andrei and Natasha, and Kuturov's defeat of Napoleon, Prokofiev has done a surprisingly effective job. Instead of beginning with a big party scene, he shrewdly chooses a tender picture of longing and rebirth when Andrei hears Natasha and Sonya on their balcony. The composer has written the girls a soprano duet that recalls Strauss's lyricism. Here and elsewhere, the voices of Radmilla Vasovic Bokacevic and Biserka Cvejic...
