DIED. Robert Fabian, 77, legendary British detective who until 1949 headed Scotland Yard's Flying Squad; in Epsom, Surrey, England. Fabian said that to beat a crook one had to follow the "reasonings of his warped mind," but his findings were as often the result of tenacious 18-hour-a-day investigations. In his most famous case, the Alec de Antiquis murder in 1947, he traced the killers through a ticket sewn in the lining of a filthy raincoat. After his retirement, he lectured and wrote Fabian of the Yard. His book and sleuthing inspired movie plots...
...least the egg throwers showed interest in the proceedings. Traditionally, Britons in June are preoccupied by far different concerns-horse racing at Ascot, the Derby at Epsom, lovemaking in Green Park, picnics on the moors and sunning at Brighton. This year, England's soccer team is defending its world championship in the tourney at Mexico City, and many voters seem far more interested in what happens there than in the June 18 vote. ...morning, but you can't find 'em in the afternoon. They're chicken. When they're hurting they don't put out. Others are different. I had a horse once who couldn't walk for three days after a race. Cheers from Patients. Five years ago, Bialoguski moved to England, set up a practice in the London suburb of Epsom and launched his musical quest in earnest. The Royal Academy and the Royal College of Music both rejected him as too old to enroll in conducting courses, so he practiced with amateur orchestras around London. When he approached Sir Adrian Boult, the doyen of British conductors, Boult offered to become his patient if he would stick to medicine. Instead, Bialoguski took a master class in conducting with Franco Ferrara in Siena, Italy. Eventually, Boult let Bialoguski rehearse the New Philharmonia...
Ojukwu's early schooling took place among the Yorubas of Lagos, Nigeria's bustling seaport capital. At twelve, he was shipped off to the best British education that an Ibo millionaire could buy, first at Epsom public school in Surrey and then at Oxford's Lincoln College. "When I first went to England as a boy," he recalls, "I was swamped by that sea of white faces. I didn't even recognize people who had been my teachers, once they were immersed among their own kind." On the debating team at Epsom, he developed a keen gift for words...
