Begun on a shoestring, Pace e Libertà got off to a slow start, but now is growing by leaps and bounds. Its paid circulation is 70,000, and an almost equal number of copies are distributed free, many of them to the Communists themselves. Recently Sogno got enough funds to buy up the entire poster space in Rome for five days, and put up 6,000 posters devoted to the past of Italy's top Communists. At first, the Reds said disdainfully that they would not reply to such "drivel," but lately they have felt driven to long...
...candidates to the new Constituent Assembly (TIME, Oct. 25). That did it. The President raised his estimate of needs to $6,200,000, adding allotments for workers' housing, new roads, and repairs for recent hurricane damage, then uncorked his capital levy. A one-shot tax,* it requires payments equal to 3% of property assessed at more than $5,000, 1% of business capital over $5,000, 10% of the average monthly earnings of professional men, $10,000 from every big sugar mill, $1 for every head of cattle from owners with herds of more than...
...ring is not made of dust particles like the rings of Saturn; it consists of hydrogen whose atoms have been ionized, i.e., broken into protons and electrons. The ring as a whole is electrically neutral since the amounts of positive protons and negative electrons are about equal, but the protons (for complicated reasons connected with their greater mass) move faster. This makes the ring, in effect, a current of positive electricity flowing around the earth...
...vaccine does not prove effective, the foundation's $9,000,000 may go down the drain, along with an equal amount being gambled by six manufacturing companies. During the winter, the companies will produce for their own account an estimated 27 million cc. (30 tons), which they hope to be able to sell (at prices still undetermined) through family doctors for private patients. In any case, no vaccine can be released except under license from the Federal Government's Laboratory of Biologies Control...
Carmen's singing, fully equal to the other sides of her performance, cannot be credited to Singer Dandridge. Her voice was found to be too light, and Marilynn Home's was skillfully dubbed in. LeVern Hutcherson does the singing for Actor Belafonte, and does it handsomely. Belafonte seems a rather Sunday-go-to-meetin' type to attract a Carmen, but he makes the big scenes convincing. Pearl Bailey, through the second half of the film, lolls around superbly under feather boas, dragging her weight in rhinestones and "livin' off de fatheads of de land...
