Capitalism: A Love Story does not quite measure up to Moore's Sicko in its cumulative power, and it is unlikely to equal Fahrenheit 9/11 in political impact. In many ways, though, this is Moore's magnum opus: the grandest statement of his career-long belief that big business is screwing the hard-working little guy while government connives in the atrocity. As he loudly tried to confront General Motors CEO Roger Smith in Roger & Me in 1989, and pleaded through a bull horn to get officials at Guantanamo to give medical treatment to surviving victims of 9/11...
...Similarly, those who see “District 9” for the violent, hedonistic ride will occasionally be put off by how heavy the plot can get as Blomkamp expounds on the limits and contradictions of human compassion. The aliens are the film’s greatest accomplishment, equal parts pitiable and repulsive. While they are horribly mistreated, their behavior often seems to deserve nothing better. ...American prodding on issues such as climate change and relations with Pakistan. They also fault the American market for the crash that brought down the global economy with it. Yet, as a whole, the people admire and respect a country that, more often than not, treats them as an equal partner, introduces new business models and economic ideas to their country, and sets a model for tolerance and diversity. As we work to rebuild our bonds with the rest of the world, these lessons are worth keeping in mind...
