Lewis' critics have responded that a genuine love of the House and its traditions, not blocking group size, creates House community. These critics are right, but all traditions are not created equal. It is worth asking which House traditions contribute to its community, and how House traditions inform the debate over the reduction in blocking group size...

...billion more than they took out through July. But last year that figure was $144 billion. And on the redemption side (ignoring new money coming in) the bloodletting has rarely been so extreme. At the current pace, investors will cash out $732 billion from stock funds this year, equal to 22% of the industry's $3.4 trillion in stock-fund assets. That percentage has run in the middle teens since 1990, according to the Investment Company Institute, a trade group. Why all the selling? Possibly online stock trading and Internet speculation--not to mention frustration with middling returns--are redirecting...

Another flag is the aforementioned heavy redemptions. Take Oakmark Fund (which I own). After a brilliant run early this decade it has lagged badly the past two years. This year shareholders have withdrawn $2 billion more than they've put in, a drop equal to a third of the fund's assets, reports AMG Data. ...lost souls come together, though, is something like an exercise in emotional sadism. Without any sense of irony, they play at love like two young teenagers, not like adults made wise by past love affairs. And like teenagers, they fall away from each other and come back together with equal parts earnestness and bewilderment. Why director Roger Mitchell thought this age-inappropriate emotional roller coaster would be entertaining, I'll never know. It's not love that William Thacker and Anna Scott need. It's some semblance of emotional maturity, or at least organizational skills...

...many interlocking issues here that it is a nightmare to explain, and even harder to explain away. The film is crossbred from many pieces. Sometimes it feels like a edgy suburban television drama like "My So-Called Life," about the trials of being a teenager and the equal trials of being a parent. Sometimes it seems to be an adult indie flick, in which bizarre actions have a way of seeming less strange when you look at them up close. Sometimes it's just a pitch-black comedy about the mean things people say to each other when they...
