Suppose today an architect planned and constructed a 30-story skyscraper and supplied it with most of the modern conveniences, such as running water, electric lights, sanitary arrangements and ventilation, but did not equip it with elevators before opening it up for public use but instead, only provided stairways from the first to the 30th floors, because a generation ago such stairways were all that were necessary in the then existing buildings.
