...however, McNamara is having his troubles with Congress-mostly in the person of L. (for Lucius) Mendel Rivers, 59, new chairman of the Armed Services Committee, a tall, militarily erect (although he has no service record) lawyer from Gumville, S.C., who now lives in Charleston. Rivers admires McNamara's ability, but he has long been irritated at the way the Secretary favored Vinson with inside information, often leaving the other 37 committee members in the dark. The new chairman's view came through clearly at a recent McNamara briefing. Riled by McNamara's patronizing attitude, he said...

Stopping the Funds. As late as 1954, the government was still reimbursing Sicilians for damage done to their ancestors' property during Garibaldi's historic 1860 campaign to unify Italy. Even Garibaldi has been kept waiting. Italy's Parliament in 1910 passed a law to erect his statue in Marsala, Sicily, but the technicalities took so long that inflation has made the original appropriation wildly inadequate. ...minor players seem to flourish within the constraints. The cast was dressed entirely in black, all the men in pants and turtleneck jerseys. Perhaps because of this they concentrated on verbal and facial characterizations. Confined behind their reading stands, they leaned on them, stood erect, or turned away as the situation demanded. It was nowhere so mechanical as it may sound. Within this small vocabulary of movements, none was ever...

Free, for a While. Once pollination is over, the insect is usually permitted to fly free, if only to be victimized by another flower. One erect and fleshy trap flower lets its prisoner fall out by merely drooping its blossom downward. The male part of the jack-in-the-pulpit allows mosquitoes to escape by opening a small hatch. But the mosquito had better be alert; its otherwise identical female part has no such escape hatch...
