...expressions of disapproval soon turned into laughter when some of the "definitions" were flashed on the screen. "Cosine is the opposite of stop sign. An erg is an urge. A millimeter is a bug with a large number of legs." Many members of the class were heard to say when leaving that some of Ufford's experiments were infinitely more amusing, recalling the time to whipped out an umbrella from behind the table to shield himself during one of the wetter ones...

...Meyer has written some 170 papers and books in long, periodic sentences which loop and wind halfway down the page. To stress the dynamic nature of disease, he invented a new system of classification based on the Greek root erg (from ergon, work). Medical students in his courses, who had to learn such tonguetwisters as ergasiatry (psychiatry), oligergasia (idiocy), merergasia (hysteria), promptly for got them after examinations. Although few understand just what Dr. Meyer says, all his colleagues know what he means. (At a Hopkins celebration once, a student delivered a long speech in Chinese, then announced: "You have just...

...Cambridge just because his name was Downer. This doesn't make any sense to me. What can be so attractive about the name Downer that people give him scholarships? Especially a feebly growing Downer who is self-admittedly a lazy sort of blighter. Why no Botsford scholarships? I bet erg for erg I can out-lethargy Downer every time out. And if Downer can be a blighter, so can I. I'd challenge him to a blighting contest tomorrow if I thought it would do any good. But I guess If Harvard's going to act like that there...

...years ago that another brainy German, Max Planck, discovered that atoms do not radiate light continuously or in indiscriminate amounts, but in separate pulses and uniform quantities which were subsequently called quanta. Planck's constant, h, is equal to .00000000000000000000000000655 erg-seconds. For any sort of light the energy multiplied by the period of vibration is always equal to h. To a physicist grouping within the atom, h and the quantum mechanics which have grown up around it are as important as bait, hook & line to a fisherman...
