Chief figure in the trial is Ernst Niekisch, a courageous anti-Nazi, who has ridiculed and opposed the policies of Adolf Hitler since the early days when the Nazis fought their political battles on the streets. A onetime schoolteacher, later an author and publisher, Niekisch took a leading part with famed Revolutionary Kurt Eisner in establishing the postWar, short-lived Bavarian Soviet State. When the Nazis came to power, his argument that both Germany and Russia were authoritarian and anticapitalistic and therefore should work together economically had numerous backers in the Nazi Party, chiefly among the followers of Hitler...
...Grosz in Berlin in the middle '20s, von Ripper resisted Nazi beatings so well that the late Austrian Government was finally able to rescue him. Elaborately Freudian and symbolic, his etchings are related in texture and technique as closely to Goya as to Contemporaries Grosz and Max Ernst. One of them is of the Man of the Year (see cover}. Artist von Ripper, an "Enemy of the State" in Germany, considers his work his answer to a Gestapo-Commissioner who warned him to keep his mouth shut...
...actually the German majority there was holding a plebiscite to return to the Reich. As in regular German elections, the opposition did not dare to campaign. The United Memel German Party won easily, claiming at least 26 of the 29 Diet seats. Said 50-year-old Horse Doctor Ernst Neumann, Führer of the Memel Germans: "We are still Lithuanian State citizens in name, but inwardly we no longer have any connection with Lithuania."
