...year-old Municipal Stadium ("Tin Horseshoe"-prices $3 top). It was an opera week for Cleveland, built up by the same two who, under Impresario Guy Golterman, directed Cleveland's first outdoor opera (for charity) last summer (TIME, Aug. 10): 26-year-old Laurence A. Higgins, and Dr. Ernst Lert, onetime Metropolitan Opera stage director (whose sister-in-law Vicki Baum was in Cleveland last week). This year they have organized a group called Laurence Productions Inc. "to present grand opera as they see it" in many cities. In Cleveland they rebuilt last year's stage, moved...
Monte Carlo Madness (UFA). Bombarded by Hollywood cinemas with for- eign dialog, European producers have tried to retaliate by making pictures in English. Trying it herein, UFA wisely chose a comedy of the type which German Director Ernst Lubitsch has made popular in the U. S., with Sari Maritza, an actress who reached Hollywood before the picture reached Manhattan, in the leading role. Monte Carlo Madness, as anyone who has ever seen a cinema about Monte Carlo should guess, is no glum study of dementia praecox. The legend from which the plot was derived concerns the captain of a destroyer...
This is the Night (Paramount). It is possible that when Director Ernst Lubitsch was hesitating to sign his new contract, Paramount's production chiefs thought it might be expedient to have a second-string Lubitsch ready. Frank Tuttle certainly directed this one in the Lubitsch manner. He even uses a Lubitsch touch at the very beginning when a lady (Thelma Todd) gets her evening gown caught in the door of a limousine and the crowd on the sidewalk turns the incident into a song-"Madame Has Lost Her Dress." The song runs through the rest of the picture...
Punctured Napoleon? Even German Reds are prudent. Last month, in the first presidential election (won by nobody since nobody obtained an absolute majority), 4,982,939 Communists turned out and voted for their "Red Napoleon," leather-lunged Comrade Ernst Thalmann (TIME, March 21). Last week, since everyone knew that Comrade Thalmann had not the ghost of a chance, more than a million German Reds prudently wasted no time in voting, left their Red Napoleon punctured flat and with only 3,706,388 ballots...
...accent which Director Ernst Lubitsch* gives to scenes like this and the polish with which Young, Chevalier and Charles Ruggles act them, that make them much funnier than they have often been before. The plot of One Hour With You is not startlingly new. Director Lubitsch himself used it before in a silent cinema called The Marriage Circle, but this time he has given it a new informality, with tricks which other Hollywood directors are bound to imitate. Chevalier addresses the audience from time to time and tells them, to make sure that they understand the story, that...
