...some of the best entries this year were just such items, like W. T. Cummings' "Beach" and Robert Harnilton's "Crucifixion." The war betwen traditionalists and modernists is useless; the only valid war is between the good and the bad, both of which can be achieved in any style. Ernst Halberstadt's representational (and Oriental-influenced) "Landscape" was fine, as was John Gregoropoulos' abstract "Olympian Landscape"; Yukata Ohashi's "Equilibrium No. 4" was abstractionism at its worst, while William Hardy's representational "Bridge at Portsmouth" couldn't even get the bridge towers in proportion...
...briefest art movement in history. Why, then, have scholars begun again to take it seriously? In the new view, it is seen as a genuinely liberating upheaval that gave some of the modern masters their first taste of bold experiment. Some of art's biggest names-Rodin and Ernst Barlach, Bonnard, Edvard Munch, Gauguin and Picasso-were at one time caught up in it. There is another reason for Art Nouveau's comeback. But at other times, particularly in his comedies, the clichés are the devices of a back-country Ernst Lubitsch; in A Lesson in Love, the last-minute, sappily symbolic entrance of a small boy dressed as Cupid is pure Kitsch...
Corelli: Concerti Grossi Opus 6 (Chamber Orchestra of the Societas Musica, directed by Jorgen Ernst Hansen; Vanguard, 3 LPs). An expert in the concerto-grosso form (where a group of solo instruments maintains a dialogue with an orchestral ensemble), Corelli was also the first to relax the strict contrapuntal style of his era, is shown in this recording to have mastered the full scope of string sonorities by making violins sound like a full-voiced choir...
