...conference with a bravura, perfectly pitched speech that left them cheering and in tears, it felt little different from those heady early days of Britain's New Labour. And to judge from the waterfall of "bold, radical" policy ideas that spouted during the week from baby-faced ministers[an error occurred while processing this directive] such as David Miliband and James Purnell, the party's next generation of leaders has plenty of steam. That was the upbeat side of Labour's annual conference last week in Manchester. But its evil twin lurked close by. Delegates seemed afflicted with a cocktail...

...state department no longer claims Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan "endorsed or espoused terrorist activity." So why won't it restore the U.S. visa Ramadan, a Swiss national, was stripped of in 2004 on those grounds? Since giving up the Notre Dame teaching position that visa was intended[an error occurred while processing this directive] for, Ramadan has repeatedly appealed to the U.S. authorities for temporary entry permits to deliver lectures there. A rejection letter from U.S. officials Ramadan made public last week cites a new offense: donating j600 to two Palestinian aid organizations purportedly linked to a group...

...there is some kind of hazard or debris on the track. Drivers must temporarily slow down, and F1 crews typically use the opportunity to bring their cars in for a pit stop. But when a safety car rolled out in the 25th lap of last year's Monaco[an error occurred while processing this directive] Grand Prix, Team McLaren Mercedes made the counterintuitive decision to keep driver Kimi Raikkonen on the track. The ploy worked; Raikkonen won. But the decision wasn't made at trackside. It came from team leaders based at the McLaren Technology Centre in leafy Woking, south...

What causes changes in both the dark matter and the genes themselves as one species evolves into another is random mutation, in which individual base pairs--the "letters" of the genetic alphabet--are flipped around like a typographical error. These changes stem from errors that occur during sexual reproduction, as DNA is copied and recombined. Sometimes long strings of letters are duplicated, creating multiple copies in the offspring. Sometimes they're deleted altogether or even picked up, turned around and reinserted backward. A group led by geneticist Stephen Scherer of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto has identified...

...that depends in part on the accuracy of fossil dating and the reliability of using genetic variation as a clock. Both methods currently carry big margins of error. But the more primate genomes that geneticists can lay side by side, the more questions they will be able to answer. "We have rough sequences for humans, orangutans, chimps, macaques," says Eric Lander, director of the Broad Institute and a leader of the research team that decoded the chimpanzee genome. "But we don't have the entire gorilla genome yet. Lemurs are coming along, and so are gibbons...
