Inevitably, the synthesizer's growing popularity has prompted fears that live musicians may be on their way to technological obsolescence. Although the machine was intended as a tool for composers, its talent for mimicry has made it a cost-effective, ersatz orchestra. Classical musicians, who play a largely 18th and 19th century repertory, are unlikely ever to be cashiered, but others are not so lucky. Complains Violinist Paul Shure, a California studio musician: "Synthesizers have all but ruined string players in recordings." Five years ago, Don Butterfield, a New York City tubist, played about 150 television and radio commercials...

WHATEVER the case, it seems foolish of the Reagan Administration not to seize this juncture as a crucial moment to build from the ashes of the Reagan-Andropov stand-off. President Reagan ought not to be sending ersatz messages of condolence in the back pocket of his Vice-President; he should be attending the funeral himself. If Reagan were to attend the funeral it would signal the end of one of the most foolish and dangerous trends in U.S. Soviet relations. Not since Kruschev came to America in the 1960s has a Russian or an American bead of state visited...

Steven Bennett (Ted Danson of Cheers) drives the kind of station wagon that has ersatz wood along the sides. He is a likable TV dad who lugs a briefcase to an unspecified job and calls his daughter "Princess." With a model wife (Glenn Close) and two exemplary daughters-in-residence, everything ought to be as comfy cozy as Father Knows Best. But Bennett conceals a malign secret: he is sexually abusing his 13-year-old daughter Amelia (played with poker-faced intensity by Roxana...

...will not start spontaneously, nor will it be avoided by chance. Real men and women, most of them anything but reckless, control the superpowers. Yet the program also made clear the unnerving flipside: for all their academic degrees and years of Government experience, the mock NSC facing the ersatz crisis showed flashes of anger, vast knowledge tinted by political bias, impatience and even occasional confusion. The Crisis Game demonstrated that for better and worse, the fate of the earth is in human hands-a useful reminder the week that a swath of Kansas and Missouri was incinerated. - By Kurt Andersen...

...ersatz early-morning blizzard hid all the main entrances to the parliamentary and government buildings. When legislators showed up for work, most were not amused. Neither was The Hague's police department, which ordered the local fire brigade to clean up the mess. Within hours, after The Hague's firemen had attacked the foamy mountains with water hoses, the square was again clear. Other wildcat job actions and work slowdowns to protest the pay cuts continued, including a week-old nationwide mail strike that has left post offices with tons of undelivered letters piled almost as high...
