Adapted and expanded from Santiago-Hudson's 2001 one-man stage show, Blues recalls his childhood in an upstate New York boardinghouse in the 1950s and '60s. His surrogate mother, Rachel (Nanny) Crosby (S. Epatha Merkerson), gives an ersatz family of wayward, mostly African-American drifters shelter, hot meals and toughlove. The youngest is little Ruben (an astute Marcus Carl Franklin), whom Nanny delivers in an upstairs room, then takes in when neither of his young parents proves mature enough to raise...
...turned peacemaker by speaker after speaker, the Brothers preferred to dub themselves the “men of the epididymis.” To live up to the title, three of the four avant-garde jugglers donned spermatozoan headgear and sang of the miracles of conception while the last ersatz sibling lolled about the stage in the filmy garb of a gigantic ovum...
...There is also a more nefarious possibility: label fraud, something the industry's umbrella group, Cashmere & Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute, takes very seriously. For the first time in a long time, cosmic planners were given reason to hope that after decades of drift, the U.S. is at last back in the space game...
...hardly a bargain. And the MBTA’s disregard for low-income users goes far beyond its fares. On the Orange Line, which serves many low-income neighborhoods, subways have been known to run once every half-hour. The Silver Line has turned out to be an ersatz subway route covered mostly by bus service. But downtown, part of the revenues generated by the higher fares will be spent on the construction of a new “Superstation” at the Fleet Center. The seeming message—that the MBTA does not care as much about...
