...Shirley. Nonetheless, Greenberg siphons all of Watergate through this couple, and, worse still, he dramatizes the banalities of their domestic life. John's premarital flings with other women (including a French floozy who seems to have stepped out of Irma La Douce) get more screen time than the Ervin hearings. The Deans' bouts with alcohol are presented with the florid excess of an old Hollywood weeper like /'// Cry Tomorrow...

Wednesday night, the Charles Mingus Reunion Band is playing at Swift's. The Master had definite ideas about how his music was to be played, and no one left his Jazz Workshop Group without a solid background in Mingus-Music. Trumpeter Ted Curson, saxophonist Booker Ervin, drummer Dannie Richmond, and the other members of the band all worked extensively with Mingus--their performance should be very special. The anti-ERA crowd filled the air with choruses of Amazing Grace! and waved placards declaring ERA the PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE. Former U.S. Senator Sam Ervin Jr. added his country-lawyer counsel against the amendment. Said Ervin: "ERA would nullify any laws that make any distinction between men and women. When the good Lord created the earth, he didn't have the advice of Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem. If any woman is being discriminated...

...finally got four acceptable candidates: Iowa Liberal John Culver, who is a close friend; Vermont's Patrick Leahy and Montana's Baucus. For geographical balance, he chose a newly elected Southerner from Alabama, Howell Heflin, who is considered a worldly moderate in the mold of Sam Ervin. The Democratic Steering Committee, which makes the assignments to committees, approved Kennedy's selections. He was then assured a solid majority on the Judiciary Committee...
