Although thematically urgent, the new novel exhibits some escapist tendencies. At the end of the book, Tolm suddenly blurts, "Some form of socialism must come, must prevail." That forms of socialism already prevail in most modern democracies should have been obvious. The Escapist successfully migrated from Manhattan to Maine, and lived to write about it. The Storyteller grew famous by turning the travels of a tweedy, 2-in.-tall mouse into a memorable Wanderjahr for children, loaded with longing and nostalgia...
...stages that lead from a stressful job to a burnt-out case: 1) The Honeymoon-intense enthusiasm and job satisfaction that, for all but a few dynamos, eventually give way to a time when valuable energy reserves begin to drain off. 2) Fuel Shortage-fatigue, sleep disturbances, possibly some escapist drinking or shopping binges and other early-warning signals. 3) Chronic Symptoms-exhaustion, physical illness, acute anger and depression. 4) Crisis-illness that may become incapacitating, deep pessimism, self-doubt, obsession with one's own problems. 5) Hitting the Wall-career and even life threatened...
...fine, a good idea. But instead of trying to understand and evoke what that evil might mean. Carpenter dresses it up in a preposterous and complicated plot, and must spend so much time sorting out the silly details that he has no time for anything more substantial. Even as escapist summer fare, this movie is a disaster--it lacks both an entertaining plot and any sympathetic characters...
...movie provides good, escapist wishfulfillment. No matter how much Murray baits the sergeant, disregards authority and breaks the rules, everything comes out all right. There's even a shootout with Russians in Czechoslovakia which pits 40 Americans against 200 Russians in closerange combat with machine-guns, mortars, grenades and cannons--and nobody gets hurt...
