...sets an easily acidulous tone; Robbins is having fun poking fun. Ultimately, as if to prove paranoia is not unique to right-wingers, he blames Bob and his advisers for every political atrocity of the past decade -- and a few new ones, including framing a rabid fringe journalist (Giancarlo Esposito) who may have the goods on bad Bob. The crimes are listed not so much to push a leftish agenda as to clarify Bob's villainy for viewers who might be seduced by his style. Robbins, eager not to be misunderstood, has insisted that there be no sound-track album...
...problem here is that the stories, characters and acting rarely justify even feuilleton treatment. The Hollywood agent (Gena Rowlands) who thinks her driver (Winona Ryder) could be a star; the Brooklyn bro (Giancarlo Esposito) who bonds with his German-born cabbie (Armin Mueller-Stahl); the blind Parisian (Beatrice Dalle) who, sigh, sees life more clearly than the African (Isaach De Bankole) in the front seat; the Finnish depressive (Matti Pellonpaa) who relates a you-think-you-got-troubles saga -- these are shaggy- dog stories without a tail. Or, really, a tale...

Wesley Snipes also turns in a strong performance as the competitive and ambitious Shadow. His fine portrayal is certainly aided by the fact that his character is the most believable. Giancarlo Esposito, who plays the quintet's flashy pianist, deserves mention as well. Nothing ill can be said of the remainder of the cast, who do not disappoint...
